Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

The Cumbres & Toltec is the most popular tourist destination here! Book your stay with us to have easy access to the railroad!

The Chama Area

Situated at  7,871 feet in the majestic Southern Rockies, Chama, New Mexico is considered one of New Mexico's best-kept secrets. Here, you can relax and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains and enjoy a variety of unique activities.

Chama is home to the historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, the longest and highest steam-powered railroad in the United States. In addition, the Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River runs right by Chama. The river is known for it's abundance of brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroats, perfect for the avid fly fisherman.

Looking for excellent hiking and mountain biking trails? The Chama area is the perfect location. The Continental Divide Trail is close to us. And the Sargent's Wildlife area, with its numerous wooded trails, surrounds Chama.

Chama is also convenient to a number of other well known locations in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. For example, we're just 45 minutes from world class skiing in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

For more information on all the Chama, New Mexico area has to offer, give us a call. We'd love to hear from you!

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, with its 64 miles of narrow-gauge track, is the longest and highest steam-powered railroad in the country.

The railroad is jointly owned by New Mexico and Colorado. Two trains run simultaneously, offering you a number of options when riding the line. Each morning, one train leaves Antonito, Colorado, and heads to Chama. Another train leaves Chama and heads to Antonito. Both trains meet at Osier, Colorado. You can choose to ride to your original destination or change trains and head back to your departure location.

The train route runs through two unusually beautiful locations: Cumbres Pass and Toltec Canyon. Cumbres Pass has an elevation of over 10,000 feet and provides a stunning view of the surrounding mountainsides. Toltec Canyon hugs the mountain along a narrow ledge, 800 feet high.

Definitely check with us for more information on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Your hosts, John Bush (recently retired president/general manager) and Veronica Bush, worked for the railroad for years, and can answer any questions you have about this unique and fascinating railroad.

My wife and I rode this railroad just a couple weeks ago and wow! I have lived in Colorado Springs for almost 50 years now and I regret not doing this trip greatly. Incredible scenery, great experience and holy cow, what a meal during the trip. (Part of the price of the trip.)

We did one trip last year in September, and enjoyed it so much we planned this year’s trip for October, hoping for peak fall colors. We were not disappointed!! Stunningly beautiful vistas, perfect weather, and an awesome staff made this a perfect outing for our family trip. Due to COVID, there were some minor changes, but everything went smoothly. I think anytime would be wonderful, but the fall trips are simply gorgeous. This adventure is definitely worth taking, book early for the fall
